The Oni Trail

Why hiking and ancient routes in Japan?
What better way to dive into the living legacies of Japan than on foot? Each area of Japan is packed with thousands of years of history, and even traveling as slowly as an ant wouldn’t allow one enough time to fully absorb each area’s culture. But we can try. Seeking out some of Japan’s ancient pilgrimage routes, centuries-old trade paths, or chasing the whispers of folklore through the mountains and small villages is an unforgettable way to experience Japan.
Why the Oni Trail?
The 100-kilometer Oni Trail follows ancient lore and oni (demon/ogre) legends across a variety of terrain with origins just north of Kyoto City, and stretching across northern Kyoto prefecture all the way to the Sea of Japan. It traverses ancient pilgrimage routes, mountain paths, forest trails, remote mountain villages, seaside villages, castle towns, and a UNESCO Global Geopark. Park hiking, part trekking, part walking; explore slowly on foot, get to know Japan, and help the planet at the same time.
Try a Guided Tour of the ancient southern section of the Oni Trail
Join a guided tour for a couple hours and walk through an ancient part of Japan, tucked into the Oeyama Mountain’s foothills. In this forest, you’ll explore Japan’s rarest torii gates, an Ise shrine that predates the Ise Jingu Grand Shrine by 54 years, and an ancient power spot where you will feel the heart of the animistic beliefs that predate even Shintoism.
A knowledgeable and trained expert will guide in English, sharing secrets and lore of this core point of Japanese spiritualism.
