Furumaya, located in Fukuchiyama

*speaks English and French

Located in the countryside of Fukuchiyama (home to Fukuchiyama Castle, the Oeyama mountain range, demons and ogre legends, sacred power spots, and cliff-side shrines), this farmhouse is an excellent way to escape the city and experience a slower-paced Japan. This farmhouse is run by a Japanese/French couple and accommodates guests from all over the world. The area offers a plethora of ways to learn about sustainability and local cuisine. The misty mountains produce incredibly clean air, water, produce, and mystical photographs! Check out their multilingual website for rates and reservations! Furumaya

Ichijuissai Chabu Dining, located in Ayabe

*Speaks English

Run by an English speaking couple who created this farmstay experience around the phrase “ichiju issai,” which is a phrase that means a simple, one-plate meal. Their intention is to showcase the amazing produce and ingredients of the region in simple dishes that don’t rely on additives. Nature provides, and to stay at this farmhouse is to be in harmony with nature. Ayabe has a lot to offer and so do the people that live here. Learn to cook like the rural people here, experience fermented foods and natural produce. Your time here will be slow and relaxing, filled with clean mountain air and pleasant conversation. There are other experiences in the village that include cooking with locals in a traditional Japanese wood-fired cooking stove.

Chabu Dining has an English website (click name for link) with a reservation button at the bottom of the page. Check it out!

price range: ¥¥two meals

Hokkori, located in Kyotango

*No English

Visitors will be welcomed at first by the burbling of the river, and shortly after by welcoming village members when staying at Hokkori. Because it is located in Kyotango, the Japanese Sea is only a few miles away. They even make their own old-fashioned sake.

Hokkori (the site is in Japanese, but pictures will give a sense of the interior. Kyoto by the Sea DMO is more than happy to help with booking)

price range: ¥¥ two meals (discount for children and groups)

Sakaya Farmstay, located in Fukuchiyama

*No English

Conveniently located in Fukuchiyama, this farmstay isn't located deep in the forest like many others, but the location still feels incredibly private, and the building's architecture is absolutely stunning. The couple that runs the inn are incredibly friendly and welcoming. And despite the language barrier, they see quite a number of international visitors. The inn itself is beautifully maintained, with so many intricate features to explore, like handmade glass windows, a private Japanese garden, wood-burning stove, and exposed beams that reveal a skylight feature.
There is, of course, a farm as well, that visitors can tour and even harvest vegetables from. The owners also harvest their own herbal tea.

price range: ¥two meals
