A café secreted away above the Sea
Taiza is a fishing village on the northernmost tip of Kyoto Prefecture, famous for crabs. Taiza Terrace is a cafe on a hill just a short way from the town center. The location has unobstructed views of the Japanese Sea, along with an observatory and a monument spelling out the word T-A-I-Z-A. It has quickly become a popular photo spot. The cafe is owned by Jukaitei, an inn known for its fresh local fish and crabs that’s actually located right next door, The owner is also a fish broker at Taiza Port.
Don’t let the fashionable atmosphere fool you, the cafe’s commitment to ingredients is comparable to that of a first-class inn. Using local ingredients like Taiza’s seasonal seafood, eggs and vegetables, as well as Tango's fermented delicacy, heshiko, (salted mackerel), the café supports and promotes Tango's food culture. There is a legend that says you can be happy if you pray to the sun. For romantics, you can swear your love by hanging a heart padlock (1,000 yen) on the observatory fence.
from the staff:
I recently returned to my hometown of Tango from Osaka, where I worked for 15 years, and I am working here. It must be fate! I think first time visitors will be impressed by this superb view! Even residents living in town don’t often get a seaside-hillside view like this one. The scenery changes not only over the course of the day, but seasonally as well: flowers in spring, snow in winter, sunsets on the sea, and fishing ships that light up the horizon at night. We currently thinking about opening at night in the future so people can experience drinking out on the terrace under the starry. I hope you’ll come.
